Cusco - Huacarpay lake - Wayquecha Lodge
our expedition begins in the historic city of Cusco, where you start your journey early in the morning. Departing the ancient Incan capital, you head southeast towards the remarkable Huacarpay Lake. Along the way, you'll have the opportunity to birdwatch in breathtaking Andean landscapes.
At Huacarpay Lake, the diverse ecosystems offer sightings of species such as the Bearded Mountaineer, Many-colored Rush Tyrant, and a variety of waterfowl. The lake's picturesque setting and abundant birdlife make it an ideal first stop on your journey.
Moving onward, you'll traverse the scenic Andean highlands, making stops to observe the rich avifauna of this unique region. As you descend through the eastern slopes of the Andes, the transitions of altitude zones bring amazing birdwatching opportunities. Expect to see high-elevation species such as the Gray-breasted Mountain Toucan, Antpittas and Mountain Tanagers.
Finally, you’ll reach the pristine Manu Cloud Forest and the upper elevation where Wayquecha Lodge is nestled. This lodge, set at the ecotonal edge of cloud forest and high-level montane forest, provides an excellent base for evening birding. Here, you can look for mixed flocks and endemic species such as the Golden-collared Tanager and Violet-throated Starfrontlet.
As the day draws to a close, the serene surroundings of Wayquecha Lodge offer a perfect spot to unwind while being immersed in the rich biodiversity of the cloud forest.
Wayquecha - Cock of the Rock Lodge
Start your day bright and early at Wayquecha Lodge, where the morning calls of cloud forest birds will be your natural alarm. Enjoy a hearty breakfast, and then prepare for a day filled with spectacular birding through diverse habitats as you gradually descend to the renowned Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge.
As you leave Wayquecha Lodge, you will make several stops along the way to observe the avian diversity of the cloud forest. Highlights here include sightings of mixed-species flocks, with colorful bird species such as Grass-green Tanager, Hooded Mountain-Tanager, and various Flycatchers. Pay special attention to the forest edges and clearings, where fascinating species like Scarlet-bellied Mountain-Tanager and Rufous-capped Thornbill might be spotted.
Continuing your descent, you’ll pass through lush montane forests, transitioning to increasingly dense cloud forest. Every stop offers a new set of birdwatching opportunities, so be on the lookout for the Gray-breasted Mountain-Toucan, Golden-headed Quetzal, and the endemic Marcapata Spinetail.
Around mid-day, you’ll reach some of the best birding spots on Manu Road, such as the Paucartambo and Ajanaco areas. The afternoon in this segment of your journey may reveal raptors like Black-and-chestnut Eagle, as well as other forest dwellers such as the Mountain Cacique and Crimson-mantled Woodpecker.
Your day's journey ultimately leads you to the iconic Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge, nestled in the lower cloud forest. As you settle in, the evening birding around the lodge promises encounters with the lodge's namesake Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, and other remarkable species like the Versicolored Barbet and the Yellow-throated Spadebill.

Cock of the Rock Lodge - Garden - Trails
Begin your day bright and early at Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge, where the dawn chorus of the cloud forest promises a memorable start. After enjoying breakfast with a spectacular view of the hummingbird garden, your morning will be dedicated to discovering some of the unique specialties in the vicinity.
Drive a short distance from the lodge to prime birding spots to observe stunning species such as the Crested Quetzal, Golden-headed Quetzal, and Dagerbill. This area is known for its tanager flocks, where you can encounter a variety of these brilliant birds, including the Cerulean Capped Manakin. The mixed-species flocks provide continuous excitement, with bursts of color and movement all around you.
Return to Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge later in the morning, where you can relax and enjoy the hummingbird activity in the lodge garden. The feeders attract a dazzling array of hummingbird species, making for excellent photography opportunities and leisurely birdwatching right from the comfort of the lodge grounds.
After lunch, set out on the lodge trails to explore the lush surroundings in search of other forest dwellers. Keep an eye out for the elusive Western Fire-Eyed, White-crowned Tapaculo, and White-throated Antpitta. These trails are rich in biodiversity and offer a perfect chance to encounter more secretive species that thrive in the dense undergrowth.

Cock of the Rock Lodge - Guadalupe Lodge
Your day starts with an early breakfast at Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge, surrounded by the morning calls of the vibrant cloud forest. Prepare for an exciting day of birding as you head towards Guadalupe Lodge, traversing a road rich with birdlife and remarkable landscapes.
Departing from the lodge, you’ll pass through diverse habitats, making several birdwatching stops along the way. The journey offers sightings of a myriad of species, with the opportunity to spot specialties of the bamboo forest such as the Cabanis's Spinetail and the Black-backed Tody-Flycatcher. These secretive birds thrive in the dense bamboo thickets, making every sighting a rewarding experience.
As the journey continues, you will pass through second-growth forests and small villages. These areas present excellent birdwatching opportunities where species like tanagers, flycatchers, and manakins are frequently observed. The lively bird songs and the picturesque scenery make for an engaging and enjoyable drive.
As the afternoon transitions to evening, you’ll approach Guadalupe Lodge. Keep a lookout for the Common Pauraque as daylight fades, often seen along the roadside or near the lodge. Their distinctive calls and fluttering flight add to the enchanting dusk, signaling the day's end.
Arrive at Guadalupe Lodge by dusk, where the serene environment offers a perfect setting to relax after a day filled with birding adventures. The comfortable lodge and its tranquil surroundings provide the ideal spot to rest and prepare for the next day's exploration.
Guadalupe Lodge - Trails - Hummingbird Gardens
Rise early to the natural symphony of bird calls at Guadalupe Lodge, starting your day with an exploration of the Palm Forest. Known for its vibrant avian activity, this habitat attracts a variety of parakeets, parrots, and the magnificent Blue-and-Yellow Macaws. The morning light filtering through the palm fronds highlights the vivid colors of these birds, making for a breathtaking sight.
After the early morning exploration, return to the lodge garden, where you’ll have a chance to spot the Buff-tailed Sicklebill, a unique hummingbird species. The lodge’s garden offers excellent opportunities to observe bamboo specialists such as the Dot-winged Antwren, Warbling Antbird, White-lined Antbird, Bamboo Antbird, and the striking Ornate Stipplethroat. These birds are often found in the dense bamboo thickets around the lodge, providing a rewarding birdwatching experience.
As the day progresses, visit the lodge’s hummingbird garden. This area is a haven for hummingbird enthusiasts, attracting at least ten different species. Look out for species such as the Woodnymph, Coquettes. The garden's diverse elevation range ensures sightings of various hummingbird specialties, making it a highlight of the day.
Spend the late afternoon exploring the lodge trails further, soaking in the rich biodiversity and serene surroundings. The trails offer opportunities to encounter other forest dwellers and enjoy the tranquil beauty of the cloud forest.

Guadalupe Lodge - Atalaya Port - Machuhuasi Lake
After an early breakfast at Guadalupe Lodge, we will depart for our exciting day of birding adventures. You'll first embark on a journey to Atalaya Port in a comfortable minivan. Along the way, keep an eye out for the Great Potoo, the majestic Great Black Hawk, and other fascinating birds of the second growth forest. Our arrival at Atalaya Port will mark the beginning of our river exploration.
Boarding a motorboat, we'll travel downriver, immersing ourselves in the serene beauty of the Amazon. Our destination is the trailhead leading to Machuhuasi Lake. This breathtaking lake is a haven for Amazonian aquatic birds, where you can spot remarkable species such as the Hoatzin, Horned Screamer, various Rails, Egrets, and Flycatchers.
After our exploration of Machuhuasi Lake, we'll make a quick crossing of the Alto Madre de Dios River. Our journey will culminate at the Amazon Avatar Lodge, where you can settle in and relax after an exhilarating day. In the evening, enjoy the peaceful surroundings or take an optional evening walk to spot nocturnal wildlife. Dinner will be served at the lodge, providing a perfect end to a day rich with unforgettable birding experiences.
Amazon Avatar Lodge - Parrots Clay Lick
On Day 7, we'll start early in the morning as we head to the parrots' clay lick by motorboat. This spectacular site offers the chance to witness great numbers of psittacids, including vibrant parrots and macaws, as they gather to feed on the mineral-rich clay. We'll return by midmorning to explore the various trails around our lodge.
Our adventures will take us through the terra firme forest, where we'll be on the lookout for awe-inspiring species such as the Harpy Eagle and the Bare-necked Fruitcrow, along with the Ruddy-tailed Flycatcher. These trails offer a fantastic opportunity to immerse ourselves in the rich biodiversity of the Amazon.
In the evening, we'll embark on an exciting search for nocturnal birds, including owls and nightjars, enhancing our birding experience with sightings of these elusive creatures.
Amazon Avatar Lodge - Atalaya - Cusco
we'll begin our journey back early in the morning. We'll depart from the Amazon Avatar Lodge by motorboat, making our way back to Atalaya Port. As we navigate the river, keep your binoculars ready for any last glimpses of the Amazonian wildlife.
Upon reaching Atalaya Port, we’ll board our minivan for the drive back to Cusco. Along the way, we'll make several stops at special locations known for unique bird species and other natural wonders, giving us one last chance to enjoy the incredible biodiversity of the region.
We'll aim to arrive in Cusco by 5:00 PM, concluding our enriching and unforgettable birding adventure.
